About VIT
The Voice for an Independent Tigray (VIT) is a global, values-driven movement born from the enduring spirit of a people who have faced genocide, injustice, and abandonment—yet remain steadfast in their fight for self-determination. VIT brings together Tigrayans and allies from across the diaspora into a unified, unwavering force grounded in truth, resilience, and an unshakable commitment to freedom.
Our Mission
At the heart of VIT lies a bold and urgent mission: to achieve Tigray's independence by empowering its people to rise, organize, and lead. Through unified participation, and grassroots mobilization, we seek to transform the collective will of Tigrayans into lasting political change. We are guided by the principles of human rights, justice, and sustainable development—not just as ideals, but as non-negotiable standards for the future we are building. Our mission is not only to challenge the systems that have oppressed us, but to lay the foundation for a Tigray where every citizen has agency, where peace is more than the absence of war, and where the future is forged by the people themselves.

Our Vision
We envision a free and sovereign Tigray—recognized across the world not only as an independent state, but as a principled, peaceful contributor to the global community. In this vision, Tigray stands tall as a nation rooted in justice, governed by the rule of law, and shaped by the aspirations of its people. We see a vibrant and unified Tigrayan community—within the homeland and across the globe—joined in purpose, bound by history, and committed to building a just future for all. Through dynamic educational efforts and powerful storytelling, VIT will shine a light on Tigray's truth: the pain endured, the courage shown, and the dream that will not die. We will challenge and dismantle the webs of misinformation that seek to erase our struggle, ensuring that the world hears our voice unfiltered and unbroken. Ultimately, our vision is not limited to the achievement of independence—it is about securing a legacy. A legacy of freedom, dignity, and democratic strength that will define Tigray for generations. VIT is here not just to imagine that future, but to bring it into being—step by step, voice by voice, truth by truth.

Our Story
Founded on February 18, 2025, in Maryland, USA, VIT emerged from the Tigrayan diaspora's deep aggrievement over the genocide and ongoing atrocities in Tigray. Witnessing the systematic destruction of Tigray and its people, we united with a singular purpose: to advocate for Tigray's independence as the only path to ensure survival and dignity.
Why Independence?
The call for independence is born from necessity, not choice. After enduring genocide, ethnic cleansing, and systematic dehumanization, it became clear that coexistence within Ethiopia is no longer viable for Tigray's survival.
Despite Tigray's historical contributions to Ethiopia's development and unity, the response has been betrayal and attempts at extermination. The war that began on November 3, 2020, revealed the existential threat Tigrayans face.
Independence is not pursued out of arrogance or separatism, but as the only path to ensure the survival, security, and dignity of the Tigrayan people.
Legal Foundations
Our advocacy is grounded in established legal principles of self-determination, including:
- Ethiopian Constitution Article 39, which explicitly recognizes the right to self-determination
- UN Charter Articles 1(2) and 55, affirming the principle of self-determination
- International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Article 1
- International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) Article 1
- Helsinki Final Act, supporting the right of peoples to determine their own destiny
These legal frameworks support the right of the Tigrayan people, as an oppressed group with a distinct identity facing existential threats, to determine their own political future.
Failure of Unity & Betrayal
The promise of unity within Ethiopia was broken by systematic betrayal and actions that undermined Tigray's security and rights, making the pursuit of independence a necessary path.
